Abstract: The Nenggiri Hydroelectric Project (Nenggiri HEP) slated for completion by 2027, stood as a symbol of progress, yet it also threatened to submerge a rich cultural heritage, green habitats and affect the local communities. The protagonist, Project Director Mr. Mohammad Zamri Ibrahim, overseeing the dam's development, was deeply concerned with the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts of this monumental project. While the dam promises significant socioeconomic benefits, including rural electrification and job creation, it also demanded careful consideration of the Orang Asli community, other villages, heritage, local wildlife and other biodiversity. Amidst public scrutiny and various sustainability standards, Mr. Zamri wondered whether Tenaga Nasional Berhad's (TNB) current efforts adequately addressed the challenges at hand. This teaching case invites users to explore the complex ESG issues surrounding the Nenggiri HEP, evaluate TNB's policies and disclosures against sustainability standards, examine the corresponding ethical dilemmas, and recommend additional policies to address these challenges, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the ESG dimensions in a large-scale infrastructure project.
