Title: Halal Certification of Chicken Slaughter Industry: Legal Needs and Reality

Abstract: The concept of halal products has gained much attention throughout the world. There has been a worldwide discussion relating to halal products pertaining to its hygienic, safety and quality assurance of the products. A case study conducted on a multinational slaughter house in Kedah, namely Jimat Jaya Sdn. Bhd. (JJSB) found that strict legal requirements imposed by the government on halal matters, which must be adhered to by the company have helped the company to gain more confidence from its existing and potential customers on its products. The company, which was categorized as a slaughter house, had involved in integrated poultry business for processing fresh, chilled and frozen carcasses, offal and chicken parts. The company was headed by the Director and Factory Manager as the top management of JJSB, had several departments instituted therein, including the Department of Accounts, Logistics, Human Resource, Store, Maintenance, Halal, Quality Assurance and Quality Control, Information Technology as well as the Department of Purchasing and Production. With the objective of enhancing marketing strategies, quality control, technological advances, experience, expertise as well as efficient product distribution management, had enabled JJSB to successfully penetrate, particularly the halal food industry in Malaysia both domestically and globally.
