Issue Date: 2017

Abstract: This case highlights some specific human resource (HR) issues pertaining to recruitment, motivation and retention that an entrepreneur should be carefully focusing on to ensure strategic business sustenance. The case deliberates on the difficulties faced by Mr JM in attracting and retaining the local workforce in his company, the 5Ds Enterprise. Having a patriotic heart, Mr JM was always inspired and felt motivated in supporting and contributing towards national well-being and development. His company offered good employment with good pay hoping that the local people of his own nation and race would grab the job opportunity. Unfortunately, 5Ds failed to get hold of them. Instead, he had to rely more on the foreign workforce, who would normally link to social, legal, managerial and other issues. The case provides a good opportunity for participants or students to understand the potential challenges in managing an SME business and discuss several issues in relation to workforce management practices and strategies. Moreover, this case would encourage students to think critically and creatively in analysing the issues and proposing practical solution and recommendations.
