Abstract: | This teaching case revolves around FGV R&D Sdn Bhd, a company led by CEO Mr. Noor Hisham Hamid, which focuses on enhancing soil fertility and productivity through innovative agricultural practices. Established on 3 August 2012 as Felda Global Ventures Research & Development Sdn. Bhd. and change to FGV R&D Sdn. Bhd. on 18 December 2018, the company faces significant challenges due to the rising costs of agricultural inputs and the termination of government subsidies, prompting the need for alternative solutions. A central theme of the case is the exploration of using pressmud, an agricultural by-product from the sugar industry, as a sustainable soil additive. The purpose of this case is to evaluate the potential adoption of pressmud-based soil amendments by FGV R&D Sdn Bhd as an innovative alternative to conventional soil improvers, highlighting the benefits and challenges associated with integrating this novel approach into sustainable agricultural practices. Concepts such as sustainability, waste management, and the impact of rising input costs on agricultural productivity are explored, alongside the importance of research and collaboration in decision-making. This case can be categorized as a decision/“unfinished” case, as it presents the dilemmas faced by Mr. Noor Hisham in evaluating the adoption of pressmud while balancing operational costs and profitability. The niche area of this case lies in sustainable agricultural practices and the innovative use of organic waste, providing insights into how businesses can adapt and thrive amid rising costs and shifting market dynamics. |
