Abstract: | Mr Viswanathan Paramasivam (Protagonist) is the Vice President of Operations and Head of Flex Penang. Despite serving the company for ten fruitful years, he still starts every day with the same amount of energy and enthusiasm. He is highly respected for his perseverance and integrity. He is also a result oriented, dynamic, and trustworthy leader. The first batch of 27 hearing-impaired employees started work at Flex Penang’s P5 plant on 3 October 2018. To date, Flex Penang has hired 106 hearing-impaired employees and wants to increase the number to 200 or more by the end of 2019. Flex has worked with the Penang Deaf Association and JobsMalaysia (Malaysia Ministry of Human Resources’ recruitment arm) to hire hearing-impaired individuals mainly for positions such as production operators. On 6 January 2022, during management meeting, Visvanathan found some pressing issues involving the hearing-impaired employees. On 9 January 2020, Viswanathan decided to overcome these problems by arranging a brainstorming session to develop solutions. He needs to decide which recommendations to execute now and should think about short-term and long-term plans as well as the way forward. In this teaching case, the authors will discover the challenges and several suggestions for Flex management to be considered to solve these issues. This teaching case will teach the concept of inclusive communication, diversity in the workforce, corporate social responsibility and sustainability plan by hiring Persons with Disabilities (PwD). |
