Abstract: Mr. Abdul Karim Chan (AKC) planned to hand over his business to his children. After almost 25 years, he felt that he had achieved considerable success in his furniture business. His business enterprise, which was fondly known as Prima Bersatu Unggul (PBU), started off by manufacturing simple furniture for schools and offices in 1997. As his business prospered, Mr. AKC began to expand and captured a new business segment, i.e., supplying furniture to university students’ hostels on a rental basis. A few years ago, Mr. AKC had also begun producing hospital furniture and leased it out to hospitals and medical centres. Although Mr. AKC felt he had achieved some degree of success, deep down in his heart, he knew his business operations and management system could be improved further, to cope with the rapidly evolving nature of businesses and stringent competition. He realised PBU’s production efficiency and cycle-time must be improved if his company planned to remain in this competitive business. Continuous improvement was certainly the key to survival. The major problems in PBU were the lack of internal control and a documentation system for the various operations of the factory. Necessary improvements to the operations and management system must be made to guarantee that his legacy of a successful furniture business continued to scale greater heights with his children at the helm.
