This teaching case is designed for undergraduate students pursuing degrees in accounting, business, management, or sustainability-related fields. It explores the dynamic world of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through the lens of a real-world company, Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia (Bank Rakyat). As Islamic financial institutions and banks increasingly diversify their CSR activities through strategic distribution, the case delves into Bank Rakyat's CSR initiatives using the Wakalah mechanism. Wakalah is the policy of zakat refund by zakat institutions to the entity that pays zakat to the zakat institutions for distribution to eligible Asnaf or beneficiaries. In this sense, Bank Rakyat, as a zakat payer, is authorized to self-distribute its business zakat refund or Wakalah fund to eligible beneficiaries for CSR initiatives, based on specific conditions after paying a certain amount of zakat to the zakat institutions. This case offers students a platform to explore the concept of CSR from an Islamic perspective and critically analyze the key success factors contributing to Bank Rakyat's remarkable sustainability journey. While managing the CSR fund can have a positive impact on the Muslim community and society, it is essential to effectively address several considerations. Thus, students can also gain insights into the numerous benefits and challenges the Bank faces in managing the Wakalah fund to support such initiatives.en_US
