Title: DEVELOPMENT OF SEAMLESS FREIGHT MOVEMENTS AT MALAYSIA AND THAILAND CROSS BORDER CHECKPOINTS

Abstract: The UFA forwarding was established as logistics and transport services mainly for trans-border crossing using the Bukit Kayu Hitam Malaysia and Danok Sadao checkpoints. The company was established in 1975 with only three drivers, three vehicles assisted by the several admin staff. 1971 with only one operator and several vehicles. Due to robust demands on the trucking businesses, the industry was expended tremendously. In the year 2000 had recorded more than 100 vehicles and 150 staff controlling the trucking market of at border areas. In 2012 the government has seen new problem at encountered at the border checkpoints which the situation at border area became hectic and delayed. In 2012 the statistics indicated that the total overall trucking operators had closed to 20 companies with approximately of 500 vehicles passing through the border. The increases of overall fleets in 10 years were approximately to 400 % and about 40% on fleets annually. On the other hand, the increases of trucking markets were only from 8 to 12 % annually. The problem occurred due to the capacity of the checkpoint facilities of fleets especially in the operational activities and demands for trucking services. At the same time the trucking industry were also slapped with higher overhead costs in maintaining the overall fleets and manpower. Several factors had been implemented for improvements in order to maintain sustainability in the trucking business; however the conditions of trucking industry were unchanged and saturated. The CEOs of the trucking industry have options as follows: a. Cutting costs measures to all related movements in trucking business b. Grounded the vehicles rather than futile movements c. Reduction of manpower d. Changing to other type of trucking services e. Reduction in maintenance costs, rental space for office, telecommunication and administrative costs.
