Mr Zakaria is the founder of the cooperative and also a pioneer of organic paddy farming in Kampung Lintang. He is involved in the decision-making to ensure the survival of the rural cooperative by helping cooperative members from the monsoon poor to generate income consistently and at the same time supporting organic living as well as supply of organic rice to meet the consumers’ demand. Cooperatives, as economic enterprises and as self-help organizations, play a meaningful role in uplifting the socio-economic conditions of their members and their local communities. The multiple roles as a farmer, trainer and cooperative chairman by Mr Zakaria limit him from managing the cooperative effectively and efficiently. The case allows students to use the system approach theory in the management of processes that transform inputs into goods and services that add value for the cooperative members. If the organization has made mostly good operating decisions in designing and executing its transformation system to meet the needs of the cooperative members, its prospects for long-term survival are greatly enhanced.en_US
