Understanding the tax planning strategies allows companies to make better plan for their business operation, cater the wellbeing of their employees and reducing their tax liability. However, most of the small medium enterprise (SME) in Malaysia are still lack of taxation knowledge and resulting them to rely solely on the tax agent to look into their tax matters. Failure to properly analyse the available solutions for a specific activity accrued out by industries may lead to large tax liability resulting in lost or decreased liquidity. This case study focuses on Proactive Furnishing Sdn Bhd (PFSB), one of SMEs situated in Simpang Ampat who involves in the trade of metal and wood-based furniture manufacturing. For the past three years since 2017 until 2019, the company claimed that the tax expenses they had to pay to the Inland Revenue Board, Malaysia (IRBM) was ridiculous. To make the situation worse, the company claimed that the tax agent hired was not helpful in giving suggestion or arrangement on how to minimise the tax burden. The aim of this teaching case study is to provide understanding to accounting students on the areas of tax planning, the differences between tax avoidance and tax evasion and the format of computation of chargeable income of company. It is also important for students to be able to identify tax deductible expenses, non-deductible expenses and double deductions as stipulated by Income Tax Act 1967 (ITA 1967).en_US
